Red Hawks go 2-0 on day one of Northwest Cup

CLACKAMAS, Ore. - The Simpson University women's softball team traveled to Clackamas, Ore., to compete in the Northwest Cup hosted by Concordia University-Portland at Hood View Park on Friday, Feb. 14.
In their first game, Simpson competed against No. 25 OIT and earned the 18-4 win. In the first inning, neither team scored with Carlye Avey pitching for the Red Hawks. But Simpson quickly found their groove, and they scored seven runs in the second inning, six in the third, four in the fourth, and one in the fifth to take the 18-0 lead. OIT scored four runs.
Junior Julissa Castellanos led the Red Hawks with a career-high nine RBIs, with Cherie DeJesus close behind with five. DeJesus, Courtney Thomas and Kara Wall each had a homerun, and Kaylana Mah and Noel Montes shared an assist apiece.
In their second game, Simpson competed against No. 18 Concordia University-Portland and won 7-5. Thomas led offensively with four RBIs, and Chelsea Dunn finished with three. Paris Hallums was the starting pitcher for the Red Hawks. She had nine strikeouts and four earned runs.
Simpson will prepare for their next games in the Northwest Cup Tourney against College of Idaho and Concordia University on Saturday, Feb. 15.
