Red Hawks lose twice on the last day of the Northwest Cup

CLACKAMAS, Ore. - The Simpson University women's softball team traveled to Clackamas, Ore., to compete in their final day of the Northwest Cup hosted by Concordia University-Portland at Hood View Park on Sunday, Feb. 16.

In their first game, Simpson lost 4-3 to Concordia University-Portland. Concordia took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Simpson tied the game in the fourth inning, when Courtney Thomas’ double brought home Marissa Bravo-Barajas. The teams were tied at three going into the bottom of the seventh; Concordia scored and won the game.

Kara Wall, Noel Montes, and Thomas finished with one RBI apiece. Wall also had the only homerun for the Red Hawks.

In their second game, Simpson lost 14-13 to OIT. Simpson took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, when Kaylana Mah scored on a wild pitch. OIT answered back in the next inning by scoring five runs. In the second inning, Simpson scored two runs off a Julissa Castellanos hit, making the score 5-3. The Red Hawks would then take the lead in an 8-5 lead in the third inning. The score became tied at 13-13 going into the ninth inning. No score from the Red Hawks in the top of the inning and a score by error from OIT gave the Owls a 14-13 victory.

Ryan Norton and Bravo-Barajas would each finish with three RBIs.

Simpson will play their final games on their Oregon trip at Northwest Christian University on Monday, Feb. 17.
