Red Hawks win two on the road against Southern Oregon

MEDFORD, Ore. - The Simpson University women's softball team traveled to Medford, Ore., to compete against the Southern Oregon University Raiders on Saturday, March 8 at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. The Red Hawks won game one 2-0 and game two 8-3.

In the first game, Simpson took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, when Cherie DeJesus scored off Shayley Madruga’s double to left field. The Red Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning, when Ryan Norton reached home off Courtney Thomas’ double to right field.

Thomas had one RBI, and Madruga went 3-for-4 with one RBI. Carlye Avey received the win, throwing three strikeouts and allowing no runs.

In the second game, Simpson scored two runs in the first inning due to a Raider fielding error. In the second inning, the Red Hawks scored two more runs on a fielding error and on a triple from Kaylana Mah to make the score 4-0.

The Warriors answered back with two runs in the fourth inning, making the score 4-2. The Red Hawks extended their lead to six (8-2) by scoring four more runs. Southern Oregon only scored one more, giving the Red Hawks the 8-3 victory.

Chelsea Dunn led all players with three RBIs, and Mah went 3-for-4 at the plate. Paris Hallums received the win. She had eight strikeouts and allowed only three earned runs.

Simpson advances to a 17-3 record overall and will prepare for their next games against Northwest University at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Monday, March 10 held at Big League Dreams.
