Simpson Takes One from Antelope Valley in Doubleheader

LANCASTER, Calif. - The Simpson University men’s baseball team split a doubleheader against Antelope Valley College of Lancaster, Calif., on Feb. 14. The Red Hawks lost the first game 4-1 and won the second 12-7.
In game one, Antelope Valley scored two runs in the first and never looked back. Simpson had seven hits but could only muster one run, while the Pioneers added runs in the fourth and fifth innings. James Humphrey earned the loss on the mound, allowing all four runs while striking out six. Josh Gilmore pitched the last two innings, allowing no runs. Daniel Mills, Elden Whisman, and Jake Parent all had two hits for the Red Hawks in the loss.
In game two, Simpson also fell behind 5-0 after the first two innings with starter Justin Hedberg on the mound. The Red Hawks started to chip away at the Pioneers’ lead, scoring two runs in the top of the third inning on a two-RBI double by Whisman. The Red Hawks took the lead in the top of the fifth, breaking out for seven runs. The inning was highlighted with RBI hits from Cody Jamerson, Mills, Blaine Hokama, Parent, Dylan Mumford, and Casey Meyer. Simpson tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth, before giving up two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The winning pitcher for the Red Hawks was Hedberg, who pitched five innings, giving up five runs on six hits and striking out three. Ryan King finished off the last two innings on the mound, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out one. The top hitters were Hokama, who went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs, Whisman, who 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, and Meyer, who was 3-for-4 with one run and two RBIs.
Simpson closes out their seven-game, Southern California road trip with a game against Antelope Valley on Sunday, Feb. 15.
