Red Hawks Explode Offensively Against Firebirds
Simpson University Sports News
REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University baseball team hosted the St. Katherine’s Firebirds on April 9 at Tiger Field in Redding, Calif. It was an offensive showcase for both teams, but the Red Hawks came out on top 24-16.
Leading the way for the Red Hawks was senior third baseman Kurtis Huffman, who finished the night with two RBIs and two runs and went 3-for-4 from the plate, and Austin Ruffner, went 2-for-2 with three runs.
It was a team effort, however, that led to the Red Hawks 24 runs and eventual win. Simpson scored a total of three runs in the first two innings. Huffman scored off of a Jacob Parent single to right, Andrew Hatfield scored after the Firebirds completed a double play, and Joshua Gilmore scored off of a balk. The Firebirds scored eight runs over the next two innings to take an 8-3 lead. The Red Hawks caught fire in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings and scored a staggering 21 runs.
Although the Firebirds were able to compile 20 hits, they only drove in 16 runs, which would not be enough to overcome the Red Hawks’ 24 runs off of 12 hits.
Nathan Reisnour received the win for the Red Hawks after pitching 1.1 innings and allowing four hits and four runs, one of which was earned. Justin Hedberg got the start for Simpson and pitched 3.2 innings, allowing 11 hits and eight earned runs with three strikeouts.
The win puts the Red Hawks at 13-28 overall record. Simpson travels to Concordia University-Portland for a four-game stint that starts on April 11.
