Thacker, Williams, and Holcomb Receive Top Conference Honors
Simpson University Sports News
REDDING, Calif. - Dalton Thacker, who led Simpson to an 8-2 California Pacific Conference record and 16-14 overall mark, was named the California Pacific Conference Player of the Year in a vote by conference coaches. He leads a list of five other seniors and four juniors who were selected to the Cal Pac's First Team, including Simpson teammates Shaquille Jones and Anthony Williams. Only Pacific Union's Jordan Greenwell is a repeat mention on the First Team. Senior Ian Corella rounded out Simpson’s Cal Pac honors by being named to the Second Team.
Thacker, a Second Team pick last season and Freshman of the Year two years ago, led the Red Hawks in scoring and rebounding, averaging 15.2 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. He also had a team-high 75 assists. He finished second in the conference in scoring average, field goal percentage (.409), and fifth in assists per game (2.5). He recorded three double-doubles on the season.
In other awards meted out by Cal Pac coaches, Simpson's Jim Holcomb was named the Coach of the Year. In his second season in Redding, Calif., Holcomb has led the Red Hawks to a 17-5 Cal Pac record over the past two campaigns.
Another Simpson standout, Anthony Williams, was selected as the Defender of the Year. The senior forward not only led the Cal Pac in steals, (64), but he ranks 11th in the country in that category, as well as 17th in steals per game (2.133). Williams also averaged 10.8 points per game and grabbed 4.8 boards per contest.
Pacific Union guard Greg Brown gets the nod as Newcomer of the Year after leading the conference in scoring with a 17.4 average. He also led the Cal Pac in free throw percentage (.745) and 3-point field goals (55), he was second in 3-point percentage (.390), third in field goal percentage (.390), and tied for fourth in steals (39). He turned in the biggest scoring performance of the year, registering 38 points against Holy Names back in November.
