Simpson University Sports News
VALLEJO, Calif. - The Simpson University men’s basketball team traveled to Vallejo, Calif., to take on the Cal Maritime Keelhaulers on Feb. 21. The Keelhaulers defeated the Red Hawks 89-78 to win the California Pacific Conference (Cal Pac) championship.
The Keelhaulers, on their senior night, jumped to a quick nine-point lead to start the game. The Red Hawks were able to bounce back, however, and tie the game at 25. The Red Hawks took a four-point lead before the Keelhaulers ended the half up two. Dalton Thacker turned in an outstanding first half performance, netting 17 of the Red Hawks’ 33 points to lead all scorers.
Simpson took an early second half lead off of a Jonnie Washburn three, but this was the last lead they had. The Keelhaulers pushed their lead to as many as 16, and despite a run made by the Red Hawks to cut it back down to six, the Keelhaulers finished them off with a final score of 89-78.
Anthony Williams led the Red Hawks with 20 points and nine rebounds. Also in double figures for Simpson were Thacker, who finished with 19 points, Ian Corella, who had 15 points, and Shaquille Jones, who finished the night with 10 points.
The Red Hawks finished in second place of the Cal Pac and will take on the Pacific Union College Pioneers on Saturday, Feb. 28 in the conference tournament semi-finals.
