Red Hawks Win Conference Home Opener

Simpson University Sports News

REDDING, Calif. - The Cal Maritime Keelhaulers traveled to Redding to take on the Simpson University men’s basketball team on Jan. 17. This was the first meeting between the two teams this season, and the Red Hawk’s California Pacific Conference home opener. Simpson came away with the 67-55 victory.

The Keelhaulers jumped to a quick 8-0 lead to start the game. Simpson surged back, and a Marc Kirkland three tied the game at 13. The two teams traded leads until an Anthony Williams basket combined with a Simpson full court press sparked a 22-point run that put the Red Hawks on top 41-19. The Keelhaulers’ effort late in the first half cut the Red Hawk lead to 17.

The Keelhaulers came out in a zone in the second half, which knocked the Red Hawks out of their rhythm, and Maritime cut the lead to nine. A late effort from Dalton Thacker, who scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half, helped the Red Hawks push their lead to 19. The Keelhaulers fought until the end, but it was the Red Hawks who held on to a 12-point victory.

Simpson was led by Thacker, who finished with 14 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Williams finished with 12 points and six rebounds, and Kirkland chipped in 10 points and five steals.

The Red Hawks will continue conference play by hosting La Sierra University on Thursday, Jan 22.
