Simpson University Sports News
ANGWIN, Calif. - The Simpson University men’s basketball team took on Pacific Union College Pioneers Saturday night to finish the first half of their California Pacific Conference (Cal Pac) play. The Red Hawks improved their conference record to 5-0 with an 85-77 win.
The Red Hawks came out to a quick 18-6 lead to start the game. The Pioneers bounced back and took advantage of the Red Hawk zone by making mid-range jumpers and back-to-back threes to tie the game at 18. After a series of lead changes, the Pioneers went into half time with a two-point lead. The beginning of the second half went back-and-forth, until the lead changed for the seventh time in the favor of the Red Hawks and they never looked back. Simpson pushed their lead to 12 at one point before eventually finishing with an eight-point win.
The catalysts of this game for the Red Hawks were Shaquille Jones, who poured in 18 points, and Dalton Thacker, who had a complete game and finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists for his second double-double of conference play. Three other Red Hawks finished in double figures: Anthony Williams (14), Ian Corella (12), and Rufus Humphrey (10).
This victory places the Red Hawks alone at the top of the Cal Pac, as they swept the first half of conference play and are currently 5-0. They travel to UC Merced to take on the Bobcats on Thursday, Feb. 5.
