Red Hawks Win Third Straight Conference Game
Simpson University Sports News
REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University men’s basketball team remains on top of the California Pacific Conference (Cal Pac) rankings after they handled the UC Merced Bobcats on Jan. 24. The Red Hawks defeated the Bobcats 94-74.
The Bobcats did not go down without a fight and with 11 minutes left in the first half, the game was tied for the third and final time. Simpson’s starters subbed back into the game at the 11 minute mark, and the defensive pressure that has been the Red Hawks’ staple this year took over. The Red Hawk lead was pushed to 10 off of an Anthony Williams' basket and didn't go back under double digits until a buzzer-beating layup by the Bobcats at the end of the half cut Red Hawk lead to eight. The Red Hawks came out of half time with a fire and pushed their lead to an eventual game-high 24 before finishing off the Bobcats 94-74.
This is the third straight win for the Red Hawks, which has them tied with Pacific Union College for the top spot on the Cal Pac leaderboard. The Red Hawks finished the night with five players in double figures. They were led by Dalton Thacker, who poured in 22 points as well as a grabbed a career high 13 rebounds to go with his four assists. Williams added 14 points and four steals, while Justin Beskeen and Marc Kirkland chipped in 12 points each.
The Red Hawks will travel to Atherton, Calif., to take on conference opponent Menlo College on Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
