Red Hawks Finish Fourth at Menlo Tournament

ATHERTON, Calif. - Simpson University’s men’s wrestling team traveled to Atherton, Calif., to compete in the Menlo Tournament on Jan. 3. At the end of the day, four Red Hawks brought home awards for their efforts on the mat.

Leading the Red Hawks was captain A.J. Valles, who captured the 141 pound championship with a 4-0 decision over Joel Palabrica of Menlo in the finals match. Valles scored an early takedown in the first round and added an escape and riding-time point for the win. He had four wins on the day.

Two Red Hawks came home with third place finishes: Richie Ortiz (157) and Marcus Zachary (184). In his consolation championship match, Ortiz decisioned Samuel Duchene of Menlo 5-3. He was 4-1 for the day. Zachary ended the day with a consolation championship pin over Paul Bracamonte of Menlo. He was 5-1 for the tournament.

Finishing fourth for the Red Hawks was freshman Fabian Aguilera. He finished the day with a 3-2 record.

In the team standings, Simpson placed fourth behind San Francisco State, Menlo, and Southern Oregon. There were 10 teams represented.
