Red Hawks Compete at National Dual Championships

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University’s men’s wrestling team started the new semester with a trip to Indiana to compete in the National Dual Championships on Jan. 9-10. This invitation-only tournament featured many of the top ranked teams in the nation. The Red Hawks were invited based on this year’s national rankings and a 13th place finish at the 2014 National Championships.

In the first match, Simpson fell to fifth seed Indiana Tech University by a score of 15-31. Individual wins were recorded by A.J. Valles (141), Matt Tsarnas (174), and Augie Alcanter (Hwt).

In the consolation round, Simpson fell to eventual sixth place finisher University of Cumberlands, Kentucky, 13-26. Individual winners included Valles (141), Richie Ortiz (157), Marcus Zachary (184), and Alcantar (Hwt).

In the final match for the tournament, Simpson defeated Hannibal-LaGrange (Missouri), 34-14. Individual winners included Ty Young (125), Fabian Aguilera (133), Valles (141), Ortiz (157), Dominic Merlo (165), Tsarnas (174), and Zachary (184).

As a team Simpson finished in tied for 13th.
