Lady Red Hawks Lose Home Conference Opener

REDDING, Calif. - The Cal Maritime Keelhaulers women’s team traveled to Redding to take on the Simpson University Lady Red Hawks on Jan. 17. The Keelhaulers, who sit in the second place spot in the California Pacific Conference (Cal Pac) rankings behind a nationally ranked Menlo College team, defeated the Lady Red Hawks 71-58.

The Keehaulers and Red Hawks battled early, with the lead changing three times in the first 10 minutes of the game. The third time changed in favor of the Keelhaulers. The Red Hawks were unable to regain the lead for the remainder of the game. The visitors’ lead hovered around 10, until they finished off the home team with a score of 71-58.

Simpson fell despite a stellar 17-point effort from sophomore guard Esther Wofford. The Red Hawks saw some promise from their two post players Katie Lenik and Brook Blaisdell. Lenik, a 6 foot senior, finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Blaisdell, a 6 foot sophomore, added 14 points and five rebounds.

The Red Hawks will continue their Cal Pac play against La Sierra University at home on Thursday, Jan. 22.
