Lady Red Hawks Lose Close Game to Pioneers

Simpson University Sports News

ANGWIN, Calif. - The Simpson University women’s basketball team took on the Pacific Union College Pioneers on Jan. 31. The Pioneers defeated the Lady Red Hawks 66-61.

The Lady Red Hawks started off slow but with the help of some hard work from Rianna Gallardo were able to stay in the game. Gallardo had two quick baskets off the bench in the first half that kept Simpson in the game early. The Pioneers led by 12 at the half, but the Lady Red Hawks would not back down. Simpson went on a 7-0 run to get back in the game early in the second half. The run was sparked by threes from Emma Limburg and Esther Wofford. Wofford continued to play strong offensively and kept the game close until the end. The Pioneers held onto their lead and eventually finished off the Lady Red Hawks 66-61.

Wofford had another stellar performance, finishing the night with 21 points, 13 rebounds, and seven assists. Katie Lenik chipped in eight points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

The Lady Red Hawks hope to pick up their first conference win on Thursday, Feb. 5, as they take on the UC Merced Bobcats.
