Lady Red Hawks Earn Two Wins on Day One of Northwest Cup

HAPPY VALLEY, Ore. - The Simpson University softball team traveled to Happy Valley, Ore., to compete in the Northwest Cup hosted by Concordia University-Portland on Feb. 20-22. The Lady Red Hawks opened their tournament play with a matchup against a 3-7 College of Idaho team on Feb. 20. Simpson came away with the 12-11 victory.
The College of Idaho came out hot, scoring nine runs in the first inning. After going scoreless in the first, the Red Hawks climbed back into the game with four runs in the second inning, as Melissa Silveira and Marissa Bravo hit a pair of two-run home runs. Simpson continued to come back throughout the game by scoring in every inning except the fifth, while only allowing two more runs in the entirety of the game. The Red Hawks closed the game out when Bravo drove in Silveira in the seventh and Bravo scored on a throwing error by the College of Idaho’s third baseman to make the final score 12-11. Kacey Pokorny was credited with the win after pitching seven innings for the Red Hawks.
The Lady Red Hawks took on the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers in their second game of tournament play on Feb. 20. Simpson won 6-1.
In the top of the second Courtney Thomas scored on a Darby Sanchez single to second. Rachel Esse scored an unearned run in the same inning. Ryan Norton scored in the third off of a double by Thomas, and Bravo later scored on a wild pitch. In the top of the sixth, Kaylana Mah a double to right center scoring Aleisha Brown. Norton then doubled scoring Mah to push the Red Hawks' lead to 6-0. The Mountaineers scored their only run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Red Hawks a 6-1 victory. Paris Hallums received the win, which improved the Red Hawks’ overall record to 7-5.
