Simpson Splits Two-Game Series With No. 8 Cougars

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The Simpson University women’s softball team traveled to San Marcos, Calif., to take on the No. 8 San Marcos Cougars in a doubleheader on March 28. The Red Hawks won game one 7-6 and lost game two 3-2.
Game one was an exciting, back-and-forth match-up between the two powerhouses. Simpson started game one with a score in the first inning that came from an Aleshia Brown single to left-center that scored Ryan Norton. The Cougars quickly retaliated with a two-run first inning of their own.
In the fifth, the Cougars drove in four runs that gave them a 6-2 lead.
The Red Hawks were able to answer back in the seventh with a clutch five-run rally that gave them a 7-6 nail-biting win. RBIs from Julissa Castellanos and Marisa Marmolejo highlighted the seventh inning effort for the Red Hawks.
Game two of the doubleheader started out in favor of the Cougars as they drove in three runs in the first inning. These runs were enough for them to overcome the Red Hawks, even though Simpson scored runs in the fourth and sixth innings. In the fourth, the Red Hawks scored off a Dager grounder that scored Amanda Laughlin. In the sixth, they scored when Brown singled up the middle for an RBI. The Red Hawks fell 3-2, splitting the series 1-1 with the No. 8 Cougars.
Hallums received the loss despite her five strike outs.
