REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball team were in action on Saturday, Feb. 11, against conference rivals William Jessup University. The Red Hawks won the 55-53 nailbitter.
The first half was tightly contested as neither team could gain control of the game. Anthony Anderson hit some huge shots for the Warriors, but some outstanding post play from Travis Derochowski stopped any momentum swinging the Warriors’ way. Derochowski had 10 in the half, while Anderson had 11 for the Warriors. The Warriors led by six at the half (35-29).
In the second half, the Red Hawks fought to get back into the game and finally tied it up at 48 with 5:24 to play. Ian Corella gave the Red Hawks the lead soon after with a great post move to score. Warrior guard Preston Bramow tied the game again with a tough shot with around four minutes to play in the game. Corella came right back and converted a one-and-one to give the Red Hawks a 53-50 lead with 3:06 to play. Anderson tied it back up with a huge three with 1:41 to play. Then, with the Red Hawks having the ball and holding for the last shot, the ball found Nick Dalby. His shot was short, but Calvin Smith was there for the put back, putting the Red Hawks into the lead for good with 0.6 seconds remaining.
Derochowski finished the game leading all scorers with 15 points. Bryan Castillo added 12, Corella had 11 and Smith finished with nine, including the game-winning basket. Anderson had 14 for the Warriors in the loss.
