This Week: The Red Hawks drew Hope International University in the first round of the NAIA Unaffiliated Grouping #2 Softball Tournament. The first round begins on Thursday, and the Red Hawks-Royals match-up is on Thursday at 11:45 a.m.
Scouting the Red Hawks: Simpson won the California Pacific Conference regular season championship with a 25-24 overall record and an 11-4 record in conference play. Senior Brooke Quaife leads the Red Hawks with a .401 batting average. Junior Morgan Davis leads the Red Hawks in ERA with a 3.47 ERA.
Scouting the Royals: The Royals finished with a 26-30 overall record and a 4-12 record in Golden State Athletic Conference play. Freshman Tori Marentis leads the Royals with a .357 batting average. Freshman Katie Gripp leads all Hope International pitchers with a 2.60 ERA.
Last Time Out: This is the first meeting between the two schools this season. The schools have six common opponents in Biola University, CSU San Marcos, Concordia University of Irvine, Holy Names University, Vanguard University and William Jessup University. Simpson was 9-11 against those schools while Hope International was 8-17.
Getting To Know Hope International: Hope International was founded in 1928 as Pacific Bible Seminary. In 1963, the school was renamed Pacific Christian College and moved to Long Beach. In 1997, the school was renamed again to Hope International University and moved to Fullerton.
About the Coaches
Simpson's Coach Wayne Stower has 11 years of coaching experience. This is his fourth year of coaching softball at Simpson. Prior to Simpson, Stower was the head coach at Foothill High School in Redding and also coached at the Amateur Softball Association of America ranks, taking seven teams to the national championship tournament.
Ty Angel is in his third year coaching as head coach and fourth overall at Hope International. His record with the Royals is 77-148. Prior to Hope International, he was an assistant coach at Victor Valley High School and was the head coach of the California Titans 18U Gold Team.
