Simpson splits doubleheader with Vanguard

COASTA MESA, Calif. - The Simpson University women's softball team split a two game series with the Lions from Vanguard University on Thursday, March 1. The first game went to the Red Hawks 6-2, and the Lions took game two by the score of 2-1.
In the first game, the Red Hawks’ Hayley Rodriguez pitched against the Lions’ Brittany Colenzo. The Red Hawks led game one 6-0 before the Lions scored. The Red Hawks’ six-run lead was powered by a three-run third inning. Vanguard scored their only two runs in the sixth inning. Corrine Alexander had a two-run home run in the third to lead the Red Hawks to the 6-2 victory. Rodriguez pitched seven innings and allowed two runs and struck out six to earn the win. Alexander finished the game 1-for-2 with two RBI, two runs, and two walks. Brooke Quaife went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Game two was a close matchup. The Red Hawks scored the first run of the game in the third inning on a Jillian Goulart sacrifice fly that scored Nicole Hutchins. The Lions scored their two runs in the fourth inning. The Red Hawks could not recover from these two runs and ended up losing 2-1. Rodriguez also started this game for the Red Hawks. This time, she earned the loss. She pitched four innings and allowed two runs on five hits.
The Red Hawks’ season record is now 9-11. They will travel to San Marcos on Friday, March 2, to play in the Cougar Clash hosted by the Cougars from Cal State San Marcos. The Red Hawks start the day against the host, with first pitch scheduled at 11 a.m. They finish off the day against Biola University at 1 p.m.
